In 2018, NASA will launch a solar probe that will travel closer to the sun than any spacecraft before. But why? What are they looking for?


The ambitious $1.5 billion Parker Solar Probe mission, named after University of Chicago astrophysicist Eugene Parker, will travel closer to the sun than any spacecraft in history and is scheduled to soar to solar orbit atop a United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy rocket from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on July 31, 2018.
